Cloth vs Disposable

By | April 1, 2012

Cloth or disposable? Which one is better? This debate has been going on since the 70s and 80s; and it continues today with each side saying theirs is the superior product. More people have turned to disposable diapers in recent years for convenience, but cloth diapers are making a comeback with new flushable linersCloth diapers are what all mothers used until disposable diapers became mainstream. These diapers are not as convenient or easy to dispose. But, at one time, cloth was all a mother had to work with. Today, cloth diapers are not our mothers diapers. There are new, flushable liners that allow mothers to easy flush the waste down the toilet. The fabrics are softer on baby’s skin and easier to clean and many now have velcro closure tabs; no more large safety pins! Advances in washing machines and tumble dryers also make it easier for moms to wash and dry the large amoung of diapers that are used, especially for newborns and infants.

Disposable diaper history starts in 1942 in Sweden. The first disposables had an inner lining made up of many layers of tissue paper. They showed up in the marketplace during the 1960s after pulp mill replaced tissue paper. At that time they were fairly expensive. Today’s disposable have an even more absorbent inner layer that they are more convenient than before. Disposables have also become more comfortable for babies, with new materials being used to make the diapers softer and more absorbant. Nowadays they will also draw moisture away from the skin to help prevent diaper rash. Resealable tabs and elasticated sides prevent leaks and allow babies to wear the diaper for longer periods of time. This helps moms and dads use fewer diapers and in turn create less waste.

Those who advocate the use of cloth diapers feel that the waste caused by using disposables will remain on the earth for many, many years since disposable diapers are not biodegradable. This can cause negative effects to the environment. With the type of materials used and the amount of processing they go through, disposables remain in landfills around 500 years. As a health measure many countries throughout the world have banned leaving untreated human waste in landfills. And so, they began incinerating the diapers, which leaves almost no residue. Still, not every country is taking these measures. On the otherhand, using cloth diapers aslo can be detremental to the environment. Cloth diapers have to be washed regularly using up water and electricity.

Another point of contention is cost. You have to take these questions into consideration: how many diapers am I using per month; how much am I spending on our diaper service; how much water and electricity am I using to launder the diapers? There are alot of valid points on each side for cost. To use strictly disposables, you may spend from $50 to $80 per month; to use cloth diapers and a service, you may spend the same. But to use cloth and launder them yourself, you may spend $25 to $60 per month.

It is all a matter of choice. Some parents use cloth diapers while at home and disposables when they go out. Others use strictly one or the other. Ultimately, we parents have to make choices based on what we think is the right thing to do and what fits into our lifestyle.

Is It Love or Infatuation?

By | April 1, 2012

One of the most difficult questions to answer, it seems, is whether or not you’re in love with someone. Or is it merely just a really hot and heavy case of infatuation? The reason this is such a hard question to answer is because the signs of love and infatuation are almost interchangeable, at first, anyway. Of course, as time goes on it becomes easier to tell the difference but, by then, it’s usually too late.Starting with the very first meeting, you both will feel a strong pull towards each other. That’s easily identified as attraction. As you talk, this attraction becomes even stronger and you want to spend as much time as you can with this person. You agree to go out on a date and that leads to even more of a pull. Now this is where things get a bit tricky.

Suddenly, you have no interest in eating and you have trouble sleeping. Nothing really interests you other than this new person in your life. It’s almost like you have a mild case of the flu. That’s why it’s called “lovesick.” When your phone rings, you jump ten feet and nearly kill yourself in answering it because you just KNOW it’s the object of your current affections. If it turns out to be someone else on the end of the phone, your heart plummets and you can barely wait to end the call.

Taking it further, when you know you’re going to see this person, your hands are sweaty and you can’t stop pacing. You check your look in the mirror over and over again, needing to look your absolute best. This is the stage when EVERYTHING this other person does is cute. It doesn’t matter if his table manners are atrocious or her laugh is enough to set most people’s teeth on edge, these are the traits of your current beloved and there has never been a more perfect person. The two of you can’t stand to be apart. You never run out of things to talk about, and you can’t keep your hands off of each other.

Now, up to this point, these symptoms may simply mean that you’re infatuated with each other or it could, indeed, be true love. Give this stage about six weeks to a full two months. If his ability to belch the entire alphabet has lost its impressiveness or her constantly interrupting you in the middle of talking is no longer charming, this might be the beginning of the end. Suddenly, you CAN stand to be away from each other for days at a time. This may mean that things are starting to settle down a bit. Now, this still doesn’t mean you’re not in love, but it does show that you’ve moved out of that “honeymoon” period that all relationships enjoy.

The true difference between infatuation and love is that even after you’ve stopped thinking everything each other does is cute and wonderful, you still want to be together, you just might be in love. If you find each other disgusting at this point, it was all a wonderful dream, or infatuation.

Decoding Food Labels

By | April 1, 2012

When you head to the grocery store, shopping for products like eggs, meat, fish, milk, and produce can be very tricky. Signs are posted everywhere labeling food as natural, organic, and a number of other things-but what’s the difference, really? Learning what specific names mean can help you decide if you should shell out extra money on a product of it is simply a marketing ploy.

Natural is a term associated with a number of fruit and vegetable products. Typically, this is simply a marketing ploy to convince you to buy the product. After all, all fruits and vegetables are natural, right? Unless it’s a new kind of food that has been developed and processed, the product is natural. What you may be looking for is organic. Organic foods are grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers. There are two main benefits to organic foods. First, you are helping the environment because those chemicals are not being introduced into nature. Secondly, you are avoiding ingesting chemicals and are therefore eating more healthy foods. However, organic products are usually more expensive. If you’re on a budget, skip over organic fruits and vegetables that you can peel, like oranges and bananas. After all, once you’ve discarded the peel, you’ve also discarded the chemicals. Instead, opt for organic items like apples, where you eat the peel. No matter what you buy, however, make sure that you rinse off the food when you get home.

Another tricky label you will see is “no hormones.” This is usually in regards to milk or meat products and is false, since all animals naturally produce hormones. Hormones are what helps an animal (even a human) regulate body organs, have young, and otherwise function. All meat products have hormones. What the labels really mean is that no hormones were unnaturally given to the animal, which is sometimes done to increase milk production. Regardless of hormones, however, the milk and meat is safe for a person and not a violation of an animal’s rights.

Lastly, a label on eggs and meat can indicate if the animal was caged or penned. This does not make a difference in the quality or nutritional value of the meat, but is simply a matter of animal rights. These products may be a bit more expensive, but if you want to make humane decisions, this is the way to go.

Reading the label and making healthy choices can sometimes be difficult, but learning how to do so can help you make the best choices for you diet.

Have Fun Losing Weight

By | April 1, 2012

You know what isn’t fair? The fact that it’s so much more fun to gain weight than it is to diet and exercise. That has to be one of the real reasons why people don’t like to lose weight, right? I mean it only makes sense. If doing what it took to be at your ideal weight was more enjoyable than what it takes to gain weight, we wouldn’t have a problem with obesity. It doesn’t have to be that way anymore. Imagine if it wasn’t such a drag to get healthy, to lose weight, to eat right or to exercise. I’m sure you can see what a positive impact that could have on how much you weigh. Here are some ideas you can put to use to make it fun.

The very first thing you have to do is change your mindset. Don’t worry about what other people think about your jogging, or what your friends will say when you order grilled chicken for lunch. You know why you shouldn’t worry? Because it’s your body! Let them laugh. You can laugh with them or laugh back at them. Either way, you’ll get the last laugh and that’s the best kind.

Alright, let’s face it, you probably already like to eat, otherwise you wouldn’t have to be looking for ways to lose weight. This is just a guess, but what you probably don’t enjoy is eating more of the right foods and less of the not-so-good ones. You can give the good foods funny names, and vice-versa. You’re not eating broccoli, you’re eating “goody goody mini-greens”. And it’s no longer a doughnut, now that you call it a “sweetened lard bomb”. Go ahead, be creative.

Also, don’t deprive yourself. You can still eat all of the foods you enjoy, just not as much. If you try to cut them out all together, that wouldn’t be any fun at all. Instead you would be focusing on the deprivation and bury your head into a half-gallon of ice cream as soon as your willpower wavered. But when you eat a little of the things you like, there’s no need for willpower at all.

When it comes to exercising to lose weight the main key is to do something you enjoy doing. Just get moving. You don’t have to go for a three-mile jog or lift weights in the gym (unless you want to). Get out in the garden, go for a walk, toss the frisbee around, go swimming…any extra activity that appeals to you will burn off extra calories.

Finally, as you do these things more, it will get to be even more fun as you do them. And seeing the results is makes it even more worthwhile. So, don’t let others tell you that losing weight is hard. You know better, you now know just how fun it can be….

Your Best Bodybuilding Program

By | April 1, 2012

If you have spent any amount of time looking into getting fit, then you know that there is a near-endless stream of advice about the best way to do it. Perhaps you have even tried several different plans to help yourself get into shape. It can be quite confusing trying to decide what works, and what doesn’t. However, when it comes to getting healthy, body building programs should be incorporated into your routine.Of course there is no shortage of various body building programs, either. The problem isn’t that there is too much information, the problem is that far too much of it is made for a general audience. Now, that may not be a big deal if you happen to stumble on a plan that is targeting somebody like you, but that’s a gamble at best, and can do more harm than good at worst.

Before you get the wrong idea about body building, you should know that it doesn’t mean you will end up looking like some muscle-bound man who is more a freak of nature (well “freak of steroids” is usually more accurate). Instead, you will look more trim, toned and ready to take on the world. It’s a way of looking your best–and more importantly–feeling your best.

So, you would like to start a program, but you’re not sure what’s best for you? There is a simple solution: get a personal trainer. If you are concerned about how expensive they are, don’t be. Sure, there are plenty of expensive trainers, but they tend to cater to celebrities and the wealthy. A lot of trainers have reasonable rates, and investing in your health is always a good idea. If you have any friends that currently have a trainer, then ask them for their recommendation.

You may also be able to find a personal trainer at your local gym. At the very least, you should be able to get some advice on the best body building programs for you. There should also be somebody at the gym who can show you how to properly operate all of the equipment and explain what muscles are being targeted.

One thing to keep in mind is that there is more to body building than just exercise and lifting weights. If you want to see real results, then you also have to watch what you eat. Don’t worry, you can still enjoy all of your favorite foods, you just have to go about it the right way. You will be working out quite often, and the food you eat is what will fuel your body for your workouts. Fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein are all good choices.

Whatever body building programs you choose, the key is to get started. You don’t have to wait until you find one that’s “perfect”, that would be a mistake. Also, it won’t always be easy and it will take work, but it will be worth it once you see the results….

The Right Snack Track

By | April 1, 2012

Snacking is the downfall of many otherwise healthy diets, but the good news is that you can learn to control this snacking quite easily. Even if still want to snack during the day, there are ways in which you can do so without killing your healthy diet. Staying on track with your diet when you like to snack might be hard, but it is worth that extra effort to keep your body healthy. To prevent snacking, simply eat more meals. Instead of eating three large meals every day, try eating smaller meals every few hours. If you are snacking because you are hungry, chances are that you are using more energy than you are ingesting and you need the extra fuel. By eating 6 smaller but healthy meals every day, you will not be tempted to snack as often, but will keep your high energy levels.

You can also help to stop your snacking simply by removing temptation. Before you reach for a snack, ask yourself if you are honestly hungry or if you are just eating because you are bored, because the food tastes good, or because you feel compelled to eat while doing a certain activity (like watching a movie). If you are snacking because you are really hungry, than it is probably fine to have something to eat, but if you are snacking for another reason, you should try to remove the temptation. Simply rid your house of junk foods and do not buy these items again when you go to the grocery store.

Purchase healthy snacks if you canâ??t curb eating between meals. Think about the snacks you are eating. Would they fit easily into a food group as fruit, vegetable, grain, dairy, or protein? If the answer is no, then the snack is probably not good for you. For example, carrot sticks (vegetables), yogurt (dairy), or whole wheat crackers (grains) work well as snacks, while candy, potato chips, and processed foods do not.

When you snack, remember to consider your beverages as well. Drinks like soda, fruit punch, iced tea, lemonade, and juice boxes can contain unnatural ingredients and lots of sugar. In short, they are high in calories but low in nutrients. Instead, opt for drinks that supplement your healthy diet. Choose water most of the time, or drinks that are made with natural fruits, like real fruit smoothies. Low-fat milk and sports drinks are also good choices. Above all, stay away from most kinds of alcohol. Red wine is an exception, since this can help your heart health, but any type of alcohol in high amounts is fairly bad for your body.

Massage For Health

By | April 1, 2012

There are many people that love to get massages because of the way they feel. You may not know this, but a massage can also benefit your health. Massage therapy and techniques, when they are done the right way, can decrease your stress levels but also relax your muscles and improve your immune system. Massages can also help to relive pain in the body and cure headaches. Healing injuries and retaining muscle and joint mobility are also accredited to massages. If you are having any type of problems with these areas and traditional medical procedures are not working for you, talk to your health care provider about the alternative therapy options like massage.

There are different kinds of massages and a professional will usually practice one or two of these. You need to visit someone who can help you with your needs. There are Swedish massages for relaxation or deep tissue massages which focus on loosening up muscle tissues.

Some of the different massages can target certain parts of the body. A Cranio-Sacral massage will focus on your neck, head, and spine to correct alignment. This will also loosen up the tight muscles in the body. Chi Nei Tsang is one type of massage that will focus on your abdominal organs and help you with your digestive pain or disease. If your joints are giving you the problem, you need to use The Trager Approach. This is a kind of massage that will improve your life through increased mobility. You can also use them in connection with the Swedish massage or other types to target the problem and relax the whole body.

Other types of massages are for relaxation or to relieve stress like the Rosen Method. All of the massages should make you feel better physically and emotionally but deep tissue massages can be a little painful and should only be used if the doctor recommends it for you. Rolfing is a deep tissue technique that works to align your tissues the right way and straighten the spine up. There may be some discomfort during the massage but after you should feel better and not worse. If your condition gets worse, you need to speak to your doctor and take different measures right away.

The other kinds of massage that may work for you will include the Alexander technique, acupressure, feldenfrais, reflexology, Reiki, and Shiatsu methods. There are different ways to use these techniques and you need to research them before you make an appointment, so you chose the correct treatment for your condition. You can find out information on how to perform the simple massage techniques on yourself to improve your comfort level or you can buy a massage chair for the home or office. Your doctor or massage therapist can help you figure out what is going to be best for you and what your body needs the most.

Single Parenthood and Dating

By | March 1, 2012

Just because you are a single parent and your first priority is your child does not mean that you should forget about your needs too. We all need to feel that we are loved and that we have someone we can depend on. This is especially true for single parents who are single handedly raising their children with minimal or no support.Single parents can definitely date but they must know their priorities and have firm rein on their self-control. They must also know when something is appropriate and when something is not. They need to get ready though because the scheduling can be hard and there is also the added stress of juggling both the problems of being in a relationship (and there will be problems, I tell you! Every relationship has them.) and raising your child alone. Here are some ways to make dating easier for you.

Be honest

Right at the get go, be honest with your date and tell them that you are a single mother or a single dad. Trust me, you will be saving yourself a lot of time and heartache if you say this at the start. Some people are just not ready for a commitment with people who already have responsibilities. Remember that they will need to not only relate to you should the relationship continue, they will also need to relate to your child. It’s going to be a package deal and for some this can be pretty scary. So save yourself the waste and tell them right off.

Set the ground rules

You need to be clear about what your priorities are and it should be on your child and on no one else’s. That way, you will be in control of the situation and you know when you should rein in your actions. When the situation progresses from dating to a relationship, it is also good to be clear with the ground rules with your partner. This will minimize any discord and misunderstandings between you two. With him or her knowing where their place is, things will be a lot easier to deal with.

Involve the child later

Although it is not good to involve the child at the early stages of the dating because he or she might be exposed to potential father or mother figures that will quickly disappear as they have appeared; when things become serious, it is good to involve the child. This way you will be able to test if you all can be a family together and if your child is okay with the idea. For those who have raised their kids single handedly from the time of their baby’s birth, this should not be a problem but for those whose children experienced the attention of a father or a mother, wooing them to the idea of having another one can be a challenge.

Dating when you already have responsibilities is tough but if you play your cards right, you might end up juggling the two together well.

Do you have intense feelings of discomfort and fear when in social situations? You may have social anxiety disorder. Social anxiety disorder affects millions of people around the world and varies greatly from person to person. However, it is important to know that if you find social settings unbearable, you can get help. A doctor will be able to help you treat your social anxiety disorder so that you can live a normal life instead of being paralyzed by fear.

It’s hard to pin down the exact symptoms of social anxiety disorder, which is why seeing your doctor is so important. However, some common signs that you may have this disorder include a number of fears. Do you commonly fear social situations? You should see your doctor if your fears reflect the following: fear that all attention is on you, fear of making mistakes, fear of judgment, fear that everyone is better than you, fear of humiliating yourself, or fear that everyone sees your flaws. These fears may or may not cause panic attacks, but always cause intense anxiety. Anxiety may lead to shaking, a pounding heart, blushing, sweating, stammering, nausea, and dizziness.

Shyness is not the same as social anxiety disorder. While you may feel shy in certain situations, social anxiety disorder is physically debilitating to a person experiencing it. In fact, social anxiety disorder may take over a person’s life if left untreated. This disorder usually starts from childhood or early adulthood and can affect everyone, regardless of race, religion, or gender, although women are more likely to develop this disorder than men.

It is also common for a person with social anxiety disorder to try to treat it using drugs or alcohol, which will in turn lead to substance abuse. The best and only way to treat social anxiety disorder is to see your doctor. Therapy and medication can help you work through this disorder so that you can live a healthy and socially active life. Cognitive-behavioral therapy will help you grip your disorder so that you can learn how to make yourself calm down and have less fear in social situations. Medications can be short or long term can work to block certain inhibitors. Together, you and your doctor can find the perfect treatment for you so that you can take back control of your life. You may have to live with social anxiety disorder for the rest of your life, but it does not have to stop you from being happy.
