Smoking
Any Hamilton Personal Trainer will tell you… It is a well known fact that cigarette smoking is
the leading cause of lung cancer. However, medical research shows that smoking causes more deaths due to coronary heart disease than it does through lung cancer! Researchers estimate as many as 55% of a smoker's red blood cells may be blocked by the carbon monoxide caused from smoking. This means that the smoker's heart has to work harder every minute of every day to pump enough blood throughout the body so that the cells receive the necessaary amount of oxygen. In addition, the research has shown that smoking has a negative iffet on your blood cholesterol levels, and it can also weaken your artery walls, making you more prone to coronary heart disease. It has also been estimated that smoking one pack of cigarettes per day creates a strain on the heart equivalent to carrying an extra 20 to 30 kilograms of body fat !
If you are a heavy smoker, the single most dramatic thing you could do to improve your healt h would be to stop smoking. The goodnews is that if you are able to quit smoking, the negative effects on your lungs and blood cholesterol can be reversed with tie. In addition, research has shown that a programof regular cardiovascular exercise, put together by a Hamilton Personal Trainer, can speed up your return to better health when you quit smoking.
